What is a Holland Code (RIASEC)?
RIASEC, or the Holland Code, is a career-interest model introduced by psychologist John Holland in 1959. It describes six interest dimensions — Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional. Your strongest dimensions form your code, which helps connect what you enjoy to study fields and careers that suit you.
Is this career test based on real psychology?
Yes. CAT is built on the RIASEC (Holland Code) model, a widely researched career-guidance framework introduced by John Holland in 1959 and used in career counselling for decades. Who we are
CAT-Test.ai (“CAT-Test”, “we”, “us”) operates this career-assessment website. For privacy questions or requests, contact us at privacy@cat-test.ai. We act as the data controller for the personal data described below.
What we collect
- Details you enter to start: first name and email address.
- Details asked between the acts: family name, country, school, the year you finish school, how school is going for you (your own rough read), what you would like to study, a yearly tuition range (or "rather not say"), where you would like to study and a WhatsApp number. Your city is optional.
- Only if you choose: the name and email of a parent or counsellor you want us to send your result to, and your answers in the optional chat with CAT.
- Only if you write to CAT on WhatsApp: your WhatsApp number, the messages you send, your result type and the look you pick for your future-me card. CAT only ever replies to you; it never messages you first. We keep the chat for up to 60 days after your last message, then delete it. If you send a photo, CAT does not open or use it. Write STOP any time and CAT stays quiet.
- Your sharing choices: whether your counsellor may see your result and whether a study advisor may contact you.
- Your answers to the assessment questions.
- Basic technical data your browser sends automatically (e.g. device type, approximate region, pages viewed), used to keep the site working and secure.
Why we use it and on what basis
- To generate your personalized result and send it to you — on the basis of your consent and to provide the service you requested.
- To keep the website functioning, safe, and improving — on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a reliable service.
- To send up to 3 reminder emails if you start the test but don't finish. Every reminder has an unsubscribe link.
- To decide which follow-up requests to answer first, we compute a simple score from your answers (for example whether you asked a study advisor to contact you, when you finish school and your tuition range). It never changes your result. You can object at privacy@cat-test.ai.
You can withdraw your consent at any time; this does not affect processing already carried out.
Do we share your data?
Only when you say so. Your school counsellor sees your result if you tick "My counsellor may see my result" or send them a copy. A parent gets a copy if you ask us to send one. A study advisor may contact you only if you tick "A study advisor may contact me". Your result link is private: anyone you give it to can open your result for 30 days, and you can switch it off any time with "Stop sharing my result" on your result page. We never sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Who helps us run CAT (processors)
We use a small number of trusted service providers who process data only on our instructions:
- Website hosting: Netlify
- Email delivery: Brevo (outbound) and ImprovMX (inbound forwarding)
- Database, email sending and school search: Google (Google Sheets, Apps Script, Google Maps school search)
- Privacy-friendly page statistics (no cookies): Cloudflare Web Analytics
- Fonts and code libraries loaded by the page: Google Fonts and jsDelivr
- Automated generation of your result text: an AI language-model provider (USA)
- WhatsApp chat with CAT, only if you write to it: Twilio (USA) and WhatsApp (Meta) deliver the messages; CAT's answers are written with the same AI language-model provider as your result text
- Usage statistics: Google Analytics (with IP anonymization; in the EU/EEA, the UK and Switzerland only if you accept cookies)
Where a provider is located outside Switzerland/the EU (for example Google and our AI provider in the United States), we rely on recognized safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) for that transfer. In the EU/EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics sets no cookies until you accept them in the cookie banner; elsewhere it is on unless you decline. You can decline at any time.
If you are under 18
CAT is intended to help young people explore options. If you are below the age of digital consent in your country (16 in much of the EU; check your local rule), please use CAT with the awareness or consent of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us data without appropriate consent, contact privacy@cat-test.ai and we will delete it.
How long we keep it
We keep your details only as long as needed to deliver and support your result, and then delete or anonymize them. You can request earlier deletion at any time.
Your rights
You can ask us to: access the data we hold about you; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to its use; or receive a copy in a portable format. To exercise any of these, email privacy@cat-test.ai. You also have the right to complain to your data-protection authority (in Switzerland, the FDPIC).
Security
The site runs over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and we take reasonable measures to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe.
Changes
We may update this policy; the “last updated” date above will always reflect the current version.

What CAT is
CAT is a free, structured career-assessment tool. It provides guidance for reflection — not professional career counselling, and not a definitive verdict on what you should do. Results are based on a well-established interest framework and your own answers.
Acceptable use
- Use CAT for your own genuine career exploration.
- Provide accurate information so your result is meaningful.
- Don’t attempt to disrupt, scrape, or misuse the service.
No guarantee
We work to keep CAT accurate and available, but we provide it “as is.” We don’t guarantee uninterrupted access or that the result fits every individual circumstance. CAT does not measure ability or intelligence and cannot predict your future.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law, CAT-Test is not liable for decisions made solely on the basis of a CAT result. Always discuss important choices with people who know you and, where possible, a qualified advisor.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Switzerland.

CAT-Test uses two kinds of cookies / local storage:
- Essential — always on. Storage on your device keeps your test progress (so you can continue later; it is cleared when you finish), a random ID for your test and your result link. A cookie recognises this device as the owner of your result for 30 days, so only you can switch your link off. No consent needed for these.
- Analytics (Google Analytics) — helps us understand how the site is used (for example which countries visitors come from) so we can improve it. We enable IP anonymization and switch off all advertising features. In the EU/EEA, the UK and Switzerland no analytics cookies are set until you click “Accept”. Elsewhere analytics is on by default. If you click “Decline”, anywhere, Google Analytics is switched off and its cookies are deleted.
You can change your choice any time — reopen cookie settings — or clear cookies in your browser settings (this resets any in-progress test). We do not use advertising cookies or ad-targeting trackers.

1. What RIASEC measures
CAT’s core is the RIASEC model (the Holland Codes), introduced by psychologist John L. Holland in 1959 and developed over the following decades. It is one of the most widely used and independently researched frameworks in career guidance, and underpins public tools such as the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET Interest Profiler.
RIASEC describes six broad interest orientations — not abilities:
- Realistic — hands-on, practical, working with tools, machines, or the outdoors.
- Investigative — analysing, researching, solving abstract or scientific problems.
- Artistic — creating, designing, expressing ideas with originality.
- Social — helping, teaching, supporting, and working with people.
- Enterprising — leading, persuading, organising, taking initiative.
- Conventional — structuring, organising data, working with order and detail.
Most people are a blend. CAT measures the relative strength of each dimension to form your profile.
2. What DPSA measures
RIASEC captures what work interests you; it says little about how you prefer to operate day to day. CAT adds a second, complementary layer we call DPSA — four operating styles: Driver, Promoter, Supporter, and Analyst. This layer sits in the tradition of four-quadrant work-style models (the DISC family, originating with Marston, 1928). We are transparent that DPSA is CAT’s own composite, used to add nuance — it is not a separately standardised, published psychometric instrument the way RIASEC is.
3. What CAT does not measure
- It does not measure intelligence, ability, talent, or aptitude.
- It does not measure knowledge, grades, or likelihood of academic success.
- It does not diagnose anything, and it is not a personality disorder or clinical tool.
- It does not predict your future, your salary, or whether you will succeed in a field.
It measures interests and preferences at one point in time. Those can and do change.
4. How scores are calculated
- You answer a fixed set of items: interest scenarios (scored toward RIASEC dimensions) and forced-choice operating-style grids (scored toward DPSA).
- Interest items add to the six RIASEC dimensions, producing a 0–100 score per dimension that reflects relative strength across your own answers.
- The operating-style grids are ipsative (you rank options against each other), which produces your dominant DPSA style.
- Scoring is deterministic: the same answers always produce the same scores. There is no random element.
5. How career clusters are matched
Your top RIASEC pattern (and DPSA style) is matched against a fixed library of career clusters and study directions, each pre-mapped to the interest profiles that tend to fit it. You are matched from your own scored profile — the system does not invent suggestions about you as an individual. The same profile always yields the same clusters.
6. How AI is used
AI is used only to write and explain your result in readable language — never to score you, decide your archetype, or choose your career matches. Those are produced by the fixed scoring and matching logic above. The AI writing step always works from your already-computed scores; with no AI available, CAT falls back to fixed written templates and the result is unchanged. No new data about you is generated.
7. Limitations & recommended use
- Results reflect self-reported interests and can be affected by mood, self-knowledge, and exposure — students rarely rate interest in fields they’ve never encountered.
- RIASEC interest fit is associated with satisfaction and persistence, but is only one input into a good decision.
- CAT is a structured starting point for reflection and conversation, best used with a qualified career counsellor or teacher — not as a stand-alone verdict.
- It is not a substitute for personal advice, aptitude testing, or lived experience (internships, taster courses, conversations).

Yes. Students take it free, and the school dashboard is free. There is no premium tier, no trial that expires and no invoice later.
What does a student see?
Their career type with a name and a cat illustration, a personality compass, their top career clusters with job titles, an honest comparison between what they planned to study and what their answers point at, an outlook on their field in the AI era, and a private link to their report by email.
What do I see?
Every student who opened your school link or scanned your poster, finished the test and said yes to “My counsellor at your school may see my result”. For each: the same report, plus talking points (strength to build on, watch-out to name, plan-vs-profile, suggested next step). Plus a class overview and a CSV export.
Do students have to use my link?
Yes, please use it. Only students who open your school link or scan your poster are asked whether you may see their result. A student who goes to cat-test.ai on their own is never linked to your school, even if they type its name, so share the link before the session.
Where is student data stored?
With our service providers. The main ones are Google (data storage), Netlify (hosting) and Brevo (email). Your dashboard never shows students’ email addresses or phone numbers. The full list is in the privacy policy.
Can a student change their mind?
Yes. A student can tap “Stop sharing my result” on their result page, or write to privacy@cat-test.ai at any time to stop sharing or to delete their result. Either way it leaves your dashboard.
Do you sign a data-processing agreement?
Write to privacy@cat-test.ai with your school’s details and we’ll go through your requirements with you.

The interest engine is RIASEC, one of the most researched frameworks in career guidance. The operating-style layer (DPSA) is CAT's own composite and we say so.
